p>The original 1993 Doom, the progenitor of nearly three decades of shooters, is still alive and kicking. While the game has seen ported to nearly every platform, it's not just a meme. Mods for the community, such as Brutal Doom, which have access to the source code of the classic game, have helped keep the original game relevant well after it was overtaken by newer games. The latest addition to the beloved shooter is newfangled lighting effects using ray-tracing.

/p>

p>This isn't the only time we've seen a combination of high-tech lighting over low-tech visuals. The well-knownly bloated Minecraft comes with official Nvidia-branded RTX support, and Nvidia has rebuilt Quake II to show off what full-blown path tracing could appear like. But the Doom mod is free to everyone PC player. It's particularly dramatic in Doom's sci-fi world that is a Martian colony infested by ravenous demons. Shadows and reflections of plasma ammunition, fireballs and lava pools show how well lighting can be, even in the basic polygonal environments of Doom.

p>The effects can be seen in action in the video below, which is from PCWorld's YouTube channel. There is also an explanation of how to activate it and play Doom with the drool-worthy lights yourself.

p>Sultim Tsyrendashiev, the programmer behind PrBoom?. He's also added support for Nvidia DLSS and other popular tweaks such as an in-game flashlight. You'll still require a robust PC to run the mod to its fullest even though DLSS can ease the strain. You can still play the original three episodes of Doom. However, you might need to change the settings file in order to achieve the best performance. You can download the mod files and the source code on Github. https://www.irc101.org/ </p>
