p>The original 1993 Doom, the progenitor of more than three decades of shooters, is still alive and well. While the game has been port to almost every platform, it's not just a meme. Thanks to the open source code of the classic game, community mods like Brutal Doom have helped keep the original game's popularity even after it's been replaced by a myriad of new games. The latest addition to the popular shooter is newfangled lighting effects that ray-trace. https://chakribakri.net/ </p>

p>This isn't the only time we've seen a combination of high-tech lighting with low-tech visuals. The well-knownly bloated Minecraft comes with official Nvidia-branded RTX support and Nvidia revamped Quake II to show what full-blown path tracing could appear like. Every PC player can download the Doom mod for free. It's especially dramatic in Doom's sci-fi world, a Martian colony ravaged by hungry monsters. Realistically rendered shadows and reflections of plasma ammunition, fireballs and lava pools show off precisely how much good lighting can accomplish even for Doom's basic polygon-based environments and sprite enemies.

p>You can see the effects in action in the video from PCWorld's YouTube channel below and an explanation of how to activate the mod and play Doom with the gorgeous lighting yourself.

p>Sultim Tsyrendashiev is the programmers behind PrBoom?. He's also added support for Nvidia DLSS along with other popular tweaks, such as an in-game flashlight. To play the mod at its peak you'll need a powerful PC, but DLSS can help reduce the load. The original three episodes of Doom are fully playable but you'll have to dig into the settings file to get the best performance on your machine. Mod files and source code are available to download on Github today.
