p>The Tate Gallery is going to showcase some of its most celebrated artworks in 3D form, in the virtual world of the computer game Minecraft. What is the best method of absorbing art?

/p>

p>Have you ever thought about taking a step into a painting and doing some research?

/p>

p>The Tate is inviting visitors to take a stroll around its art and take a good look.

/p>

p>There are no security guards watching.

/p>

p>It has teamed up with the makers of Minecraft - an online computer game in which millions of players meticulously build fantasy worlds, block by block - to create 3D versions of two of its works in a brand new virtual gallery.

/p>

p>The first to receive this digital, 3D transformation was Andre Derain's 1906 painting The Pool of London and Christopher Nevinson's painting of New York City, Soul of the Soulless City (1920).

/p>

p>"Visitors will see a white cube that is the Tate Gallery," explains Jane Burton, Creative Director of Tate Media.

/p>

p>"You enter the room with the painting in front of you.

/p>

p>"What you can do now is take a walk towards the painting and literally plunge into it. This is where the adventure starts."

/p>

/p>

p>Visitors will be able to engage with the painting's world.

/p>

p>You'll be able to ride a train to get a passing view of the cityscape of Nevinson, for example. Stop for sandwiches while waiting for construction workers to finish the skyscrapers.

/p>

p>Visitors should be aware of pirates in the Thames when they visit Derain's painting, and can experiment with mixing explosive paint pigments.

/p>

p>"You are challenged to explore the world of activities and challenges that are related to the themes of the artwork.

/p>

p>"It's art, history, and adventure," says Jane Burton who's children introduced her to the wonders of Minecraft.

/p>

p>The idea to exhibit in Minecraft originated from the artist Adam Clarke, who is a well known creator in the Minecraft community.

/p>

p>He suggested the idea for Tate's IK Prize. This prize is awarded to an idea using digital technology to encourage people with the arts.

/p>

p>Tate employed the talents of other famous Minecraft builders, like Featherblade, Featherblade, Dragnoz and Featherblade, to create the worlds inspired from the famous photos.

/p>

p>However there are those who aren't convinced.

/p>

p>Perspective

/p>

p>These Minecraft creations will help younger viewers a better appreciation of art works so that they can see original artworks in galleries. Rachel Campbell-Johnston, Times art critic, says it's like "seeing an old friend".

/p>

p>That sense of recognition, "like seeing a celebrity", is a powerful way to aid art appreciation, and encourage audiences.

/p>

p>She continues, "But ironically the Minecraft games themselves offer a flatter experience." https://xrplay.org/ </p>

p>"It is more of an entertainment experience instead of a creative connection with the painting, when [Minecrafts's] 3D mapping replaces the realistic painting's illusionistic surfaces and does the work for you."

/p>

p>Digital opening

/p>

p>The two works by Derain and Nevinson will be available to download on Monday.

/p>

p>Players must pay to join the Minecraft community, but the downloadable maps of the Tate's images are free.

/p>

p>With six more 3D masterpieces planned viewers will be watching to see how big the lines are on Monday, when Tate's Minecraft exhibition opens its digital doors.
