p>Children and adults alike aren't just playing Minecraft in their millions: they're watching YouTube videos created using Minecraft - and those videos are racking up billions of views.

/p>

p>Octoly, an online video company has released a study that aims to quantify this. It states that Minecraft videos were watched 30.8 billion times as of June 2014. Only the 183 million views came from Mojang the publisher of Mojang. https://minecraft-servers.cc/ </p>

p>This is almost three times more views for Grand Theft Auto videos. Octoly estimates that Grand Theft Auto was the second most watched gaming brand on YouTube with close to 12 billion views. It was ahead of Call of Duty (10.2 Billion), Angry Birds (6 Billion) and Halo (4.8 Billion).

/p>

p>The company claims that since June, Minecraft videos have been watched 16 billion times, taking its total to 47 billion views. "In June, our Octoly360 system identified 81,000 distinct YouTube creators who were talking about Minecraft," explained Octoly. "Today there are 147,000 creator channels with Minecraft videos, almost double."

/p>

p>Minecraft being so much ahead of other brands shouldn't be a shock to anyone who's been keeping track of the game or the development of YouTube over the last few years.

/p>

p>In a chart of the top 100 YouTube channels in September 2014, which was published by industry site Tubefilter, based on data from analytics firm OpenSlate?, child-friendly Minecraft channel Stampy was the third largest channel in the world , with 189.6 million views during the month.

p>Popular channels that featured an extensive or complete Minecraft focus were also popular in September, such as Vegetta (8th in the world with 164M views in September) as well as The Diamond Minecart (10th place with 161.8 million views).).

p>Mojang has supported its YouTube community since the early days of Minecraft by avoiding copyright disputes with video creators, and not allowing any input to the content of their videos.

/p>

p>"We have a whole slew of people who are making their entire income making videos about Minecraft. Just the economics of that - how many people are making a living off this one IP is pretty amazing," Mojang's chief operating officer Vu Bui told the Guardian in October.

/p>

p>"That isn't taking anything away from us, and I would think it adds value to Minecraft that we have people who are extremely talented and creative in their work. We've basically outsourced YouTube videos to a community of millions of people, and what they come up with is more creative than anything we could make ourselves."

/p>

p>YouTube is the primary reason Minecraft is so popular in 2014. It's also a major factor in Microsoft's decision to purchase Mojang at $2.5bn.

/p>

p>Microsoft isn't just buying a popular game that's sold more than 54 million copies across computers, console and mobile it's buying one the largest television brands in the world. Despite its immense popularity online, it is not shown on traditional television.
