The Beano's Dennis, Gnasher and Walter join Minecraft By Emily Thomas Newsbeat reporter

Minecraft players should be on the watch for Walter "softy" and his stinky pants.

Walter, Dennis the Menace and his dog Gnasher from The Beano, can now be added to PC versions of the game.

Gnasher can be turned into as a sausage by players, and all of Dennis' tricks, including catapults and stink bombs can be used.

It's part of the Beano's bigger plans to expand into digital and its model has emerged out of a partnership between the show and Frima Studios, a Canadian multiplatform game developer.

Mark Cotton, who is responsible for digital transformations at Beano, told Newsbeat that Minecraft is "their most fervent passion and their most cherished love"

Mark says that the game is an extension of the comic and a way of making The Beano "a more holistic experience" for children.

"Roughly 32,000 comics are sold every week at the Beano which is an impressive number," he says.

It's still far lower than the two million copies sold during the height of the magazines.

"We are very aware kids today are captivated by digital technology," Mark says. Mark.

"We need to turn The Beano into an all-encompassing brand where Dennis and Gnasher is everywhere that kids are, instead of expecting that they will come to us.

"So we're putting together an entire series of articles on the next three to six month."

Some of these initiatives include puzzle-based apps, an interactive comic, and an "action 3D game for kids".

The Beano's publisher DC Thompson has already extended the brand's reach to a television show, a photo sharing app and a YouTube channel.

Grand Theft Auto? https://photography-blogs.co.uk/

The comic has been in existence since 1938, and has a lot of adult fans. It's possible that the Beano characters be featured in any adult games - Dennis the Menace in Grand Theft Auto perhaps?

"No. It's not something we'd be focusing on right now," says Mark.

"We're focused on the 7-11-year-old digital product - for the moment, digital for us is about engaging with children and discovering their passions."

They've been working with 10 Minecraft and Beano fans aged 7-11 during the development process.

Minnie the Minx

"We basically asked our kids"If you were to put Beano into Minecraft What do you think you would see?

"This was their first step towards imagining what they wanted. Evidently, their imaginations go far beyond what we could ever imagine at the moment.

"But they wanted to play pranks, they wanted Walter, they wanted Gnasher, they wanted to dress as Dennis and that's what we've given them.

"We'll keep talking to them. We'd like to expand this and build Beanotown to allow kids to be creative.

"Minecraft is so popular because it gives children the ability to make decisions. If we try to restrict the kids and tell them what to do, they'd probably reject it."

Are there any other characters who will get a glimpse?

"We definitely want to expand it," says Mark.

"Minnie the Minx is the obvious character and the one that kids have been asking about. So that's what I'd probably look at next."
